Herjólfsnes

There where two ships on the first leg of the journey.  The one under the control of Herjólfur Bárdarson, piloted by Bjarni Grímólfsson and Þórhallur Gamlason and a crew of nine others not named in the manuscripts.  This ship is escorting the excil Eirik the Red and his family out of Iceland.  I expect Herjólf Bárdarson and the crew to have taken all the major fjords for there settlement for all to enjoy untill the whole crew except Herjólfur Bárdarson was lost at see close to Ireland around the year 995.  Herjólfur Bárdarson was the highest in rank of the crew selecting the best place for settlement at Herjólfsfjorden, the only fjord not frozen over most of the year and safe for navigation all year long.  The cairn at Herjólfsnes is the proof of that.  This property Herjólfsnes was later donated to the Monastery of Videy by the family of Herjólf Bárdarson later in the development.  The property was later under the control of the Order of St. Thomas around the year 1300.
